Covid-19 has had a big impact on the education system in Canada. Initial shut down of schools left parents scrambling to find things to keep their children engaged. Schools moving to on-line learning has had varying results, great for some kids, further detrimental to others. Depending on province/location/situation, some schools are starting to open back up to students, but all in a limited capacity.
In case you haven't noticed, it's the 50th anniversary of the Appolo 11 moon landing. In celebration of this momentous achievement, there are lots of information sources available this year, and I wanted to highlight some of them.
I follow many astronomers and astronomy writers through podcasts and social media, so I've known about the upcoming eclipse on August 21st for years. A little over a year ago a list of locations and events was released, and we right away signed up to camp for the weekend at a location in the path of totality. We are super excited, and in the last week all media is covering the up coming eclipse. In preparation for the trip, we've learned so many things when it comes to eclipse watching, and I want to share some of those things here.
Since we started findAtutor.ca tutors have asked: how do I move my listing higher on the list? The answer has always been: you can't. We just changed the answer: use listing points!
Tutors now have the option to purchase listing points, and use them to bid for a higher position in the search results list. All tutors have been e-mailed with details about how the listing points sytem works.
So what does this mean for those looking for tutors?
In preparation for installation of our next set of new features, we will temporarily disable the ability to login or create new accounts on findAtutor.ca over the Labour Day long weekend.

1. Mobile responsive! Yay!
We are gearing up to do a major update to findAtutor.ca. It's been in the works for a long time, and we plan to bring it on-line this weekend.
Some things will be unavailable as we re-configure everything to for the new version. Be assured that all user data has been backed up and we will have everything back up and running in the next few days.
We will be suspending new account creation and login for existing accounts so that we can restore current data once we've updated.
A math blogger I follow posted a link to an article in the Washington Post titled Why did I give up on math? Ask my mom. It was written by a journalist that enjoyed math as a child, but when she struggled a bit in grade 7, her mother told her "It's OK to be bad a math, I'm not good at math either." And so she gave up, taking her mother's statement as

Even though for most students September has a feeling of a new start to the year, January is a good time to make resolutions for improving at school too.
Like all resolutions, small achievable goals that turn into habits are easiest to keep, and offer the best return for improvement. Resolve to get organized, get a good agenda to keep assignment due dates organized. Set aside a specific time to do home work daily. Add studying or practicing to your regular schedule, just like you would sports games or music lessons.
